Every funnel has a seam that nobody watches. It sits between the team that generates and qualifies demand and the team that closes it. Pre-sales to sales. BDR to AE. Marketing to commercial. The names change, the gap does not.
It is the most expensive gap in the funnel precisely because it is invisible. A lead that dies in the handoff never shows up as a loss. It was never really anyone’s number. It just quietly disappears between two systems, two teams, two definitions of what qualified means.
What is usually broken
Three things, almost always. The first is definition. The BDR thinks a lead is ready. The AE disagrees. There is no shared, written line for what ready means, so every handoff becomes a small negotiation. And negotiations leak.
The second is context. The AE receives a name and a phone number, not the conversation that came before. The lead repeats themselves. Trust drops on the first call. The third is timing. Hours pass between qualification and first contact, and a warm lead cools fast.
A lead that dies in the handoff never shows up as a loss. That is exactly why it is so expensive.
How I think about fixing it
The fix is rarely a new tool. It is a shared definition written down, an automated transfer that carries the full context with the lead, and a routing rule that closes the time gap. The CRM should make the right handoff the easy one.
When I rebuilt this for a 14-rep team, the win was not a dashboard. It was that the AE opened the deal and already knew the story. The system carried the context, so the human did not have to rebuild it. That is the whole game.
